We in the St. Lawrence County Clerk's office and Department of Motor Vehicle offices pride ourselves in serving others and pledge to serve promptly, courteously and professionally.

 

The County Clerk in St. Lawrence County oversees 5 offices which include the Clerk's office located in the Courthouse building at 48 Court Street in Canton and 4 convenient DMV offices located throughout the county, addresses listed below.

 

The main function of the Clerk's Office is that of record keeper for the county, serving as a recording office for deeds, mortgages and many other legal documents pertaining to real estate.

The County Clerk is also the Clerk of the Supreme and County Courts and files divorces, judgments and many other documents for these courts in this office.

Furthermore, the Clerk's Office issues pistol permits, veterans ID cards, peddler permits to veterans, transient merchant licenses, files military discharges, autopsy/coroner reports, notary public commissions, business certificates (DBA), administers & files oaths of office, serves as a passport acceptance agent, serves as a collection office for fines and surcharges ordered to be paid by the courts and is responsible for the preservation of documents and helping the public gain access to the records they need to find.

 

The County Clerk also acts as an agent for the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. Our 4 DMV locations in St. Lawrence County are all full service offices where our dedicated staff can quickly & efficiently serve you and process your renewals. We encourage you to do all of your DMV business locally because St. Lawrence County keeps a portion of the revenue for each transaction that is processed in our county offices and this helps to reduce your county tax levy.
