Chris Rediehs, Commissioner
St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services
Brief Description of Services:
The St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services provides temporary assistance to eligible individuals and families to help them with their basic needs until they can become self-sufficient. Toward that end, we have employment programs and other supportive services such as day care so that people can find and maintain employment. We also administer programs which can assist people with their medical expenses and nutritional needs.
In addition, Children's Services helps families deal with problems so they can stay together and, when necessary, provides foster care. Child Protective Services investigates allegations of abuse and neglect. Child Support assists in collecting financial support from legally responsible relatives.
Press Release - July 27, 2016
Pursuant to Title 18 of the New York Code of Rules and Regulations §407.10, the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services will hold a public hearing on August 9 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. in Room B-04 of the Social Services building, located at 6 Judson Street, Canton.
The Department is preparing to amend the County’s 2016 Child and Family Services Annual Plan Update and is seeking input regarding decreasing the family share percentage from 25 percent to 15 percent to help more families with daycare costs using State funding from the NYS Child Care Block Grant. Residents of St. Lawrence County are invited to participate in this process by contributing ideas concerning a change in Appendix M “Family Share” of the plan. The categories of families that would be affected include those with incomes between 100 and 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. A copy of the Child Care section of the 2016 Child and Family Services Annual Plan Update with the proposed amendment is available through the PDF links below. The public comment period runs through September 1, 2016.
Anyone who is unable to attend the public hearing may submit comments to Nancy Russell, Fiscal Manager, St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services, 6 Judson Street, Canton, New York, 13617, or by phone at 379-2134.
