 Press Release

Grass Carp Available

The grass carp is one of the largest members of the minnow family, commonly reaching weights in excess of 25 pounds. It has an uncanny ability to control a wide variety of aquatic plant species. Grass carp feed strictly by grazing on aquatic vegetation and do not share the bottom feeding habits typical of common carp and goldfish.

The sterile Triploid Grass Carp weigh about one half pound and are ten inches in length when stocked. They can grow up to six pounds per year, live up to 10 years and may ultimately consume 100% of their body weight each day in vegetation.

Plant control with triploid grass carp is most successful when the fish are stocked just as plants begin growing in the pond. The St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District is now accepting orders for our Spring 2009 stocking program. We expect a June 5 delivery date.

For more information or an order form and a DEC permit application, please phone the SWCD at (315) 386-3582 or stop by the office at 1942 Old DeKalb Road, Canton, NY 13617. Forms and information are also available on our website at www.slcswcd.org.
